SARASOTA - Construction of a $ 25 million, 139-foot-tall air traffic control tower at the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport has been completed.

Halfacre owner Jack Cox said Halfacre Construction Co., a part-owner of the project, started the project in November 2015.

"This job requires about 30 contractors and more than 100 construction workers," Cox said in a press release. "The final costs, including design, construction and equipment, total about $ 25 million.

He said: "The new tower is equipped with the latest aviation technology that provides air traffic controllers with more accurate system information about weather and flight data."

According to published news, tower glass for cranes and hydraulic vacuum lifters has been raised, a purpose-built device specifically designed for heavy and very large sizes. The glass was installed and mechanically retained in a custom curtain wall frame around the cab tilting towards the runway at a 15 degree angle.

Each large custom glass item from Key Glass LLC of Manatee County is about 125 inches top, 108 inches bottom, 98 inches high and weighs about 1,560 pounds. Each is laminated and consists of three trapezoidal ultra-low iron annealed half-inch glasses.

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport will now work with the Federal Aviation Administration to commission new facilities. The tower is expected to start operation this summer.
